The Victory of the Sovereign Lamb: A Theological Analysis of Easter from a Calvinist Perspective

Abstract

This article analyzes Easter from the perspective of Calvinist theology, emphasizing its understanding as the historical fulfillment of the Covenant of Redemption (Pactum Salutis), established in eternity among the persons of the Trinity. The research, of a bibliographic nature, is based on authors from the Reformed tradition, such as John Calvin, Herman Bavinck, Francis Turretin, and John Owen, as well as biblical texts. The results demonstrate that Easter is not a contingent response to sin, but the execution of God's sovereign decree, in which the death and resurrection of Christ fulfill a specific legal and redemptive function. The resurrection is presented as the climax of this plan, guaranteeing the justification of the elect and confirming the effectiveness of Christ’s sacrifice. The analysis highlights central concepts such as eternal election, total depravity, limited atonement, and monergistic regeneration, showing that salvation is exclusively the work of divine grace. Furthermore, the study addresses the dimension of the resurrection as the beginning of the restoration of creation. It is concluded that, in Calvinist theology, Easter represents an event fully determined by God's sovereignty, in which all glory is attributed exclusively to Him, summarized in the expression “Soli Deo Gloria”.
