Abstract

The bioeconomy offers sustainable alternatives for the comprehensive use of natural resources. This study aimed to extract essential oil from wood residues of Ocotea aff. aciphylla, a species belonging to the Lauraceae family and popularly known as “abacatirana.” Parts of the tree traditionally regarded as residues, including bark, leaves, and branches, were used to reduce waste, add value to forest resources, and generate additional income for farmers. The essential oils were obtained by steam hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Seven extractions were performed: four from dried bark, with a maximum yield of 0.9%, and three from the trunk, with a maximum yield of 0.5%. Due to its higher yield, the chemical analyses focused on the oil extracted from the bark. The chromatogram revealed 29 compounds, among which neointermedeol (16.06%), bulnesol (8.08%), guaiol (7.36%), elemol (5.73%), 5-epi-7-epi-eudesmol (5.51%), and terpinen-4-ol (1.65%) were predominant. These compounds have potential applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries, highlighting the economic and environmental relevance of the species. This approach also seeks to encourage sustainable production practices and strengthen local value chains based on Amazonian biodiversity and technological innovation. The results demonstrate that adding value to wood residues is a viable strategy for integrating sustainability and the bioeconomy, as it reduces waste, increases raw material utilization, and promotes the sustainable socioeconomic development of agricultural communities while contributing to environmental conservation and responsible forest use.
