Abstract

Polylaminin (PLn) consists of a supramolecular network derived from the self-association of heterotrimeric laminin under specific electrostatic conditions, particularly in acidic medium and in the presence of Ca²⁺. Although widely investigated from biological and biomaterial perspectives, its description from a strictly chemical standpoint remains limited. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the primary molecular structure, elemental composition, functional group distribution, protonation states, and electronic properties of the monomeric unit, correlating these aspects with supramolecular reticular organization. A statistical bidimensional unit cell model is proposed based on the trivalent connectivity of LN domains, including discussion of lattice parameters and surface density. Collective vibrational properties, effective Debye temperature estimation, thermodynamic foundations of self-association, and mechanical modeling of the supramolecular mesh are addressed. The influence of pH and Ca²⁺ coordination on modulation of the system’s free energy is discussed. Experimental gaps are identified, and advanced approaches involving calorimetry, vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, and quantum modeling are proposed. It is concluded that polylaminin represents an organized macromolecular system whose full understanding requires integration of structural chemistry, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and materials science.
